What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by the inability to get an adequate amount of sleep each night.  If you have insomnia, you may have difficulty falling asleep or you may wake up at night and have difficulty falling back to sleep.

It is estimated that approximately 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia each year.  The problem tends to increase with age and affects about 40% of women and 30% of men.

Insomnia can be transient (short term), intermittent (on and off) or chronic (ongoing).  Sometimes insomnia is related to a medical condition.  Most often insomnia is related to stress (stress insomnia) or to an environment that is not conducive to sleep (i.e. disruptive noise such as sleeping with a partner who snores can interfere with sleep).  Identifying the cause of your insomnia is the first step to finding a cure for insomnia.

Insufficient sleep can lead to an array of problems. Insomnia side effects include decreased ability to concentrate, poor memory, irritability, poor motor coordination, and general fatigue during the day.
